Overcoming the humdrum shape of a long, thin garden is the biggest challenge we face in creating an interesting outdoor space. To help to break down the boundaries of a rectangular outline, we usually apply flowing, curving lines and we add height and structure by planting bamboo. In this case we went for a softer and more colorful look, complementary to the big and beautiful West European oak and beeches at the back. The biggest challenge was not the narrow shape of the garden, it was to work around a existing swimming pool, a dominant feature located in the middle of the garden.
We started gardening with removing all clean and hard architectural shapes and alongside we divided the long outdoor space into different square areas, which are all connected through a new narrow stone path that we created. To subtly camouflage the swimming pool, we used a lot of green buffers, such as plants and flowers. There’s a very nice view on the swimming pool and the garden from the house and so we had to make sure to provide an all year-round interest. Therefore we decided to use a diverse texture, height and movement of perennials and flowers. In this case every season comes with a different color and different tone.
